Welcome to Emory & Henry's Reading First Academies 2005!

This web log is for Reading First Teacher Reading Academy Participants during the summer of 2005. You will find information here on the event as well as responses to your comments. You are welcome to leave comments, and I will check the log each day and try to keep up with your questions!

Your instructors and I are all looking forward to seeing each of you at this exciting event that will be rich with excellent resources and ideas that you can use in your classroom.

Please remember to bring with you to the Academy your teacher's editions of the texts you use in reading, social studies, and science classes as well as the Teacher’s Edition of your reading program and your favorite narrative and expository children’s books. These books will be used in activities and exercises during the Academy. Other classroom supplies will be provided for you.

You will be attending the Academy on the campus of Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia. Emory is located at Exit 26 on Interstate 81. From the exit, follow the signs to Emory & Henry College.

Registration and attendance really costs a lot, but it is free to participants thanks to grant funding! That means it won't cost you anything to attend.

Each morning there will be a continental breakfast buffet in the Academy area (fruit, coffee, tea, muffins, etc.). Lunch will be provided in the college dining hall, and light refreshments will be served in the afternoon.

If you are coming from outside the region and wish to reserve a place to stay, please do so quickly. The Virginia Highlands Festival is in Abingdon during your stay, and rooms will fill up quickly. Abingdon, at exits 14-19 on I 81, about five to ten minutes from the college, has many accommodations.

The Virginia Highlands Festival which will be making your hotel rooms scarce includes an array of entertainment and educational activities: presentations by Barter Theatre, arts and crafts exhibits, lectures, antique shows, street exhibitions and performances, and fun in Abingdon. Plan to enjoy the Highlands Festival with us!

I am looking forward to meeting each of you and having a great first week in August!
